How these tiny lights are bringing value to a market focused on something smaller.

Measuring about the diameter of a human hair, the mini LED is tiny. Although, it’s not as small as its widely recognized counterpart, the micro LED, which is often cited as the next generation of lighting technology. It is important to note, the products that mini LEDs are targeted to support should not be dismissed as merely an interim solution. The Rohinni team has seen traction with mini LED technology as a viable long-term solution and not just a transition between traditional LED lighting solutions and micro LEDs. Mini LEDs have proved to be valuable for enabling both high-volume manufacturing and new, innovative product design applications. 

As a basic distinction, mini LEDs are bare die 99 microns and larger (per Touch Display Research). Like the smaller micro LED, mini LED technology will enable brighter, thinner, flexible, and more energy-efficient products. To make those products a reality, mini LED has to achieve economical volume manufacturing in order to be viable for mass adoption.  

Value in Process

Mini LEDs have a few manufacturing-process advantages that result in best-in-class products. Their size, allows us to select individual die, place them at various pitch spacing options, and bin them at specific wavelengths, resulting in the best product performance with respect to brightness, color temperature, and uniformity specifications. Mini LEDs also enable the use of various industry-available substrates and many size configurations of the bare LED die to achieve desired product design and performance. Because Rohinni’s process places at industry record speeds, accuracy, and yields, our solution is economically viable as well.

The performance that mini LEDs offer makes them useful for applications such as consumer, i.e., displays, keyboards, and logos; automotive, i.e., tail lamps, safety indicators, and rear view mirrors; and general lighting for decorative interior and architecture. Because of its mass-manufacturing viability, the mini LED has earned its place in the market, delivering new lighting technology to consumers sooner than micro LED technology.

Value in Product

When the manufacturing process is finished, mini LEDs’ advantages prove similar to those of micro LED technology. The small die save power and are brighter than current LED technology, resulting in longer-lasting and brighter devices. In addition, mini LED solutions can fully compete with OLED technology on brightness, life, and cost, making better products more accessible for all consumers. The mini LED solution also allows lighting designers to imagine new solutions, as they are able to develop lighting products in all shapes, sizes, and colors. Consumers can look forward to a better overall experience with their consumer electronics and display devices thanks to the previously overlooked, yet highly valuable, mini LED.
