How consumers will feel the impact of micro LED technology

Rumor has it, six years ago, Rohinni’s co-founders took the exit money from their previous successful startup and hit the beach. After about a week, they started dreaming of their next venture together. Armed with intimate knowledge of keyboard technology, Cody Peterson and Andy Huska turned their attention to the potential for mini and microLED backlights in keyboards.

Thanks to their insight, Rohinni has entered the market with the intent to revolutionize light in the products consumers touch every single day. These microscopic LEDs have the potential to have a massive impact on light as we know it and consumers have a lot to look forward to.

Commonly referred to as “next-generation display technology,” micro LED has the potential for broad adoption in consumer electronics, automotive/mobility, and general lighting. In all applications, the technology promises lower power consumption, extreme design flexibility, high brightness and a thinner stackup. From laptop keyboards to TVs, designers are continually seeking thinner, brighter, better products for consumers. Mini and micro LEDs offer the opportunity to advance consumer products for a superior user experience. 

According to Statista data from 2019, there were 162.3 million laptops sold in 2018. The vast majority of these notebooks were equipped with a keyboard backlight, powered mostly by side-firing LEDs mounted on a light guide plate. Light loss from side firing negatively impacts the LEDs’ uniformity and power draw. However, with the next wave of new laptops (sales of 166 million are projected in the coming year), the keys we touch to send an email or write a blog can, instead, be lit by micro LEDs. This means a thinner keyboard stackup and much less backlight power consumption. So,  you could use your computer a little longer on the beach (or in the mountains) without searching for an outlet. In addition to the keyboard backlight, the small LEDs can be applied to accent lights and logo indicators for a more distinct and cooler consumer product. 

The next area of focus is the display market, with its huge potential for mini and micro LED application. From consumer electronic displays to in-home theater wall displays, micro LED technology can transform the viewing experience. With a better contrast ratio, localized dimming, much higher brightness levels and minimal natural degradation over time, the new technology will, again, change the way that we view media and enjoy the screens we look at every day. Imagine rewatching Game of Thrones (season 8, episode 3) on a TV that actually shows true blacks and really bright lights.

More than these two major categories, mini and micro LEDs are poised to revolutionize automotive tail lights and safety indicators, general architectural lighting, and medical equipment. The flexible applications and microscopic size of the new technology our co-founders invested in over six years ago will touch almost every part of our lives. In general, Touch Research Display reports that the micro LED market is estimated to increase to $5.7B in 2029 (up from $3M in 2017). Every type of display and indicator will be touched by the technology. 

Everywhere there is light, someday there will be a microLED. And with our technology designed to overcome the main hurdle to market acceptance -- fast, accurate and cost-effective mass production of these tiny devices -- revolutionary light is close at hand.
